Artisan Crafts / Costumery / Masks

The Plague Doctor makes a house call.

The hat is a last minute substitute since the tricorn or cocked hat I was planning to use with the mask was borrowed by my younger sister for her pirate costume.

This project occupied most of my time and October. It was fun researching and reading about Venetian masks, but this mask was fascinating enough that I had to try constructing one.

Paper mache, acrylic paint, and mod podge.

It is most creepy but so kool!!!

Anna and I were going to try and make masks one summer, but we never got around to it...too many other things to do!!

I didn't know whether it was going to scare the children on our block, but most of them were fascinated by it and I did get one dad (dressed up as Harry Potter and I think his little daughter was a Hogwarts student) say that he loved the costume.

Mask making is fun, especially when it comes to paper mache masks; I think the research and planning made me realize how much work goes into making one, but the end product surprised me. During the two weeks I had to push myself to complete the mask because halfway through, I seriously thought I was doing it all wrong and it wasn't coming out the way I wanted it to look compared to the reference pictures.
